The first strategy to make money online is building a list.

This strategy is the most important step to continue to make money long term. If you do not already have some type of autoreponder system you need to get one. Don’t be cheap here either because your entire business will hinge on this one piece of software.

The next step does require you to have a website in order to implement an opt-in list form. Of course if your Affiliate program does offer a list management service then you can send traffic to the affiliate URL, but I don’t recommend it as you will usually not be able to email the entire list with special offers.

To make the most of your opt-in form and get the most signups, you should place it in your sales page text. It should be strategically located in the sales text after you present a problem. The title of your autoresponder email series should address the problem by offering a solution. In the example below we will assume that I am selling a hosting package and I want opt-in subscribers to my email course for back-end sales.
The second strategy to make money online is driving traffic to your website.

When I say traffic, I don’t just mean any old traffic, I mean targeted traffic, people who are motivated and ready to buy can and will make you money.

Blogging is a great way to drive targeted traffic to your website. To get the most out of this technique the blog should be hosted on the same website as the sales page that links to your affiliate program. Once its setup, all you have to do is fill your blog with good quality content.

I recommend writing your own content which specifically relates to your affiliate program and or products. Once you have some content you will need to submit your RSS feed to as many blog search engines as you can. This will put your blog out there for other webmasters to use as content feeds on their websites.

This win-win situation allows webmasters to have quality content on their website, which increases the value of that website while driving targeted traffic directly to you.

This is done by the URL link that you conveniently placed under your name after the blog was written. That means that your link is on a blog feed that is on thousands of websites. Not only do people click those links but Google sees these links pointing back to you and thinks that you’re popular and you are rewarded with a higher page rank.

Article writing is basically the same as blogging except the information in an article will need to have more useful content and be peppered with keywords that the webmasters are looking for. After completing your article you will submit (syndicate) it to content sites as opposed to blog search engines.

Linking is perhaps the most widely used form of increasing traffic and page rank. However, if done incorrectly you could end up hurting your Google page rank and ultimately losing potential buyers. You will need your own website for this technique as you will need a ‘links’ page to place your reciprocal links on.

Many people go and submit their URL links to link farms in an attempt to trick Google into giving them a better page rank. This does NOT work; in fact Google has been known to penalize websites for engaging in these activities.

The secret to linking is to find websites in your niche market which have a Google page rank of 4 or above and enticing the web master to list your link on their website. You may think that you would be helping your competition.  Well, you would be. But your competition would be helping you as well. It’s better to send departing traffic to a partner than just having them close their browser window and, remember, that works both ways.

If you’ve just entered the world of blogging or if you’ve been blogging for a short time and find that things are not working out as you expected, it will be worth your while to spend some time understanding the common mistakes that bloggers make, mistakes that make it hard to enjoy what should be an enjoyable, satisfying experience.

The five most common new blogger mistakes are:

  1. Diving in (rather than wading in)
  2. Having unrealistic expectations
  3. Losing focus
  4. Plagiarizing
  5. Ignoring the reader

Diving in! Many bloggers are so anxious to get started that they dive in rather than wading in slowly — its a mistake in an unfamiliar swimming pool or pond and its a mistake when entering a new arena such as the ‘blogosphere.’

Find a focus for your blog . . . a focus that reflects what you know, what interests you and what you enjoy talking and writing about. No topics are out of bounds: politics, religion, science, sexual orientations, comedy, exercise, diet, diseases, etc., etc..

Take the time to read dozens of different blogs: note the colors, graphics and layouts to get an idea of what appeals to you. Also note that some bloggers are long-winded and others are brief and to the point . . . others are just chatty and entertaining and have no particular point to make . . . this too is a personal style you get to choose.

You need a host for your blog, some are free, some charge a small amount per month for their service, some are simple to use and some require more technical knowledge, some have more features than others; choose carefully, once you’ve established your blog and have a few regular readers you may not want to change your address (your URL).

You may or may not want to use your real name on your blog, this depends on many factors, not the least of which is your stance on controversial issues and how publicly you want to be identified with your opinions.

Unrealistic expectations! If you come to blogging expecting instant results: a large readership and many complimentary comments, you may be disappointed. There are tens of thousands of blogs online vying for the same audience. Patience and tenacity are essential on your part. If you write well, find a unique niche to fill, have appealing titles for your posts and tirelessly promote your blog the readership and comments (some of which will be complimentary) will come.

Losing focus! When you started your blog you had a particular reason for doing so; it might have been to express your views on a topic or it might have been to just communicate with a close circle of friends about your daily activities. Readers will come to your blog for the first time and either be interested in your subject matter or not, will either like your style or not and, if they like your subject and style they may comment and then come back later. Once you’ve established a topic and tone for your blog you’re free to change it but to do so you’re basically starting all over. Be aware that you can have more than one blog, each one devoted to a particular topic and each one, if you choose, under a different identity.

Plagiarizing! There are some great bloggers out there and as you surf through blogs you might find one who said something really well, something that resonated with you and something you want to put in your blog. DON’T just copy and paste someone’s words in your blog without giving them credit, making it look to the world like the words are yours. If you write it, write it in your own words and write it better, adding your own thoughts and feelings and then be gracious, mention where you got the idea and provide a link.

Ignoring the reader! Some of the people who read your blog will leave comments; some readers will agree with you and some readers may even praise your insights but most will pick a point you’ve made and criticize it. People leave comments on others blogs for the same reason they themselves blog, to exchange ideas and express their points of view. Always respond to your readers comments; thank them for reading and taking the time to comment (even the severe critics) and then respond, as appropriate, to their comment. If you ignore your comments your readers may end up ignoring your blog.

Traffic Exchanges – Will They Work for You?

The key to successful marketing on the internet is to drive traffic to your website. Having a website that just sits, not promoted, is not only a waste of time, but also highly frustrating.
I have been intrigued by the idea of internet marketing for years, but it has taken me a long time to overcome all the traps involved in actually getting started.
What I have learned is that the internet marketing process can be relatively simple. You have to find a market, develop a product, and build a website to promote the product and process transactions. But, all of your efforts will be useless if nobody visits your website.
There are at least six ways to increase the number of visitors to your site, including word of mouth from one web user to the next (you are reading this post, aren’t you?), buying targeted clicks to your site using paid keyword advertising on search engines such as Google, sending advertising emails to your proprietary list of prospects which you generate by signing up previous visitors to your site, exchanging links for your website with other websites that have similar products to your own, paying someone else with a proprietary email list to send sales letters for you (you can pay for this with a flat fee up front or in the form of commissions that result from the emails they send), and paying fees or commissions to other websites for putting your banners, ads, or links on their pages. By using these techniques you will increase the number of visitors to your site, which is almost guaranteed to increase your sales.

Traffic exchanges, also known as hit exchanges and start exchanges, are a very simple means of driving traffic to a website.

Being in a traffic exchange is like being in a club. You surf, using a specially designed “surf bar” unique to the traffic exchange in question, and view the other club member’s websites. Every time you view a website you get a credit, or a point, and these are exchanged for visitors who view your website. Normally there is a “ratio” involved and – for free members – it is often one return visitor for every two websites that you view. Most exchanges are free to join but many have a “pro upgrade” option where you can get a better view/return view ratio (say 1:1) for a monthly fee, typically a few dollars a month. The large majority of members in the typical exchange are free members.

Traffic exchanges are much maligned – there are many who will tell you that they don’t work. One of the main reasons cited for this is the fact that most of the traffic exchange members are members of the exchange primarily because they are already promoting a business opportunity or product of their own.

Whilst this is almost certainly true it does not necessarily mean that they will not be interested in what you are promoting. If you are offering either an informational product or any kind of tool which could be used to enhance an already existing business then the members of traffic exchanges could very well be an excellent target market for you.
